The Ionian Sea

This is perfect cruising ground! Green wooded islands rise out of sparkling blue sea, and the weather is invariably good throughout the summer months. The afternoon breeze makes it an ideal area for sailing and there are many places of historic interest to visit.
Here, too, are quiet sandy beaches in picturesque coves where you can anchor for a stroll in the cool shade of an olive grove, or enjoy an afternoon of water sports such as swimming, snorkeling or windsurfing. In the evenings you can tie up on the quay at one of a number of holiday resorts in the area such as Nidri or Parga and join in the nightlife there, or if you prefer you can visit a small village and sample traditional Greek hospitality at a local tavern. Summer nights in Greece are quite magical and what better way to enjoy them than to have your own beach barbecue beneath the bright stars.

The Ionian islands have a high incidence of winter rains and the islands and coast maintain their fresh greenness throughout the summer even though from late April to early October there is very little rainfall and almost continuous sunshine. The sea is warm and clear. The summer weather patterns are fairly constant. The moorings are generally calm and the breeze that get up around mid-day rarely exceeds Beaufort 5, creating superb conditions for sailing. By evening all is quiet again.

Our cruising area extends from Corfu in the north of the Ionian Sea to Zakynthos in the south. One of our favourite bases is at Preveza the starting point of your holiday, with its own airport, you can be aboard you boat in next to no time. This Greek town of 12.000 inhabitants has everything you need to set up for a memorable holiday. There are super markets, banks, a post office as well as specialist shops for diving or fishing. In addition there are many fish taverns and cafes to explore. Nearby are the ruins of the ancient city of Nicopolis, built by Octavian to celebrate his victory over Anthony and Cleopatra at the battle of Aktion.

By flying directly to Preveza you begin your holiday in the very center of this unique cruising ground. From here you can sail north to Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos, Syvota and Parga or south to Lefkas, Kefalonia, Ithaka and Zakynthos and the smaller islands Meganisi, Kalamos and Kastos. Preveza is situated at the entrance of Amvrakia Gulf, which, because of its special condition, has become a natural marine park protected by an international treaty. Here can be found many varieties of plants, birds and sea life including dolphins and sea turtles. For those with particular interest in bird watching this is an ideal opportunity to indulge yourselves

The Aegean Sea

Another well protected area is the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean. Leave from Kalamaki Marina and Cruise to the nearby Islands of Hydra,Poros, Aegina & Spetses all within sight of each other. One can also continue into the sheltered Argolic Gulf and south to the spectacular port of Monemavssia which is well worth the trip.Visit Mykonos for its lively nightlife and bustling boutiques, and neighboring Delos for its many historical temples. Drop anchor in tiny, unspoilt Iraklia to spend a long, lazy afternoon in the excellent taverna at Agio Giorgios. Be sure not to miss the chance to see the most spectacular view in these islands as you approach Santorini. Immense, dramatic cliffs topped with white sugar-loaf homes stand out against the dense blue sky. However, August can often bring the northerly Meltemi winds to these seas, making for some problematic crossings. For those who prefer more relaxed cruising, the Cyclades are to be avoided during this month.

Slightly more sheltered is the Dodecanese islands in the eastern Aegean, off the coast of Turkey, Our bases are located on the beautiful islands of  Rhodes ( or Rhodos ) and Kos, in the south and Samos in the North ( although not strictly in the Dodecanese chain ), all offering easy access via airports you can visit lovely. The chain of islands, extending nothwards up to  Patmos, taking in many beautiful and varied islands including Kalimnos, Lipsi, Leros, Pserimos and Symi. This area is ideal for both 1 & 2 week cruises.

Another ideal location for a short cruise is the Northern Sporades. Embark at Lavrio and sail up the Chalkis Canal, perhaps taking time off at Skopelos to see the pine-covered hills of the interior. Visit Skiathos island for a lively night out before heading east to the unspoilt Pelion peninsula. Take advantage of the sheltered anchorages in the Haldiki peninsulas for visits to Athos and Thessaloniki, where Café Society flourishes along the city's bustling waterfront.

All Greek islands have something special to recommend them; the light, the architecture, the sense of being steeped in history. A yachting holiday is the one way to experience what all those tourists want to find, but at the same time, have the pleasure of being able to retreat to the peace and privacy of your own ship. On such a cruising holiday you are free to roam from island to island, cove to cove
